What is “Boho” and the Hottest Boho Boutiques for Cary Locals

(The Triangle Trend) — Bohemian, boho, and boho-chic have all been buzz words for the past number of years within the fashion industry. And though consumers may constantly find themselves fascinated by the products and designs defined as “boho style,” many don’t quite understand what the term means.

In short, bohemianism can be defined as “socially unconventional in an artistic way.” So any nonconforming piece, compared to modern styles, that allows the buyer to secede from conventionality in life and in art can be described as “bohemian” (Bohemian etymology).

To clear up some common misconceptions, being bohemian doesn’t mean someone is a hippie or native of Bohemia (a region of Czech Republic).

The term originated from the French word “bohemiens,” used to describe the nomadic group also referred to as the Romani people, in Bohemia as well as the artists of Paris in the nineteenth century. Both groups were regarded as social outcasts at the time.

Owning boho style goods by no means implies that someone is actually a “lifestyle bohemian”—defined as a person who lives and acts by a different set of conventional rules and practices. Boho chic draws on inspiration from both bohemians and hippies, which explains the appeal since many Americans have always found 20th-century hippie fashion to be trendy.

Boho chic clothing and décor combines bold, relaxing, and unusual textures, patterns, and colors while incorporating an eclectic mix of natural elements.

According to The Spruce, the modern boho-chic continues to be eclectic but with an emphasis on ethnic and vintage pieces from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. Here are some great boutiques in the Cary area offering boho styles for all occasions.
